Putting the planet first

We track our emissions from raw material extraction to delivery, minimizing our footprint, and procuring offsets when needed by supporting conservation and restoration projects including Rimba Raya and renewables energy projects Crow Lakes Wind and our own tablet/powder manufacturing. To achieve carbon neutrality, Blueland works with The Change Climate Project to audit our company’s entire operations as well as the embedded carbon in all of our products’ input materials. This includes auditing energy used to manufacture our products, the corrugate our products are shipped in, the directional insert included in our kits, storage and fulfillment of our products and shipping product components between our manufacturers, warehouses and ultimately to customers’ homes. The audit also includes company travel, team members’ daily commutes, office furniture and technology we’ve purchased and the energy used to power our headquarters.

We approach all product development with our core four beliefs:

We were the first to bring the dry tablet form factor to market across a range of cleaning products – from hand soaps and cleaning sprays to laundry and dishwasher tablets. Our tablets are 10x smaller and lighter than conventional water-based cleaning products which allows us to pack roughly the equivalent amount of cleaning solution onto one shipping pallet compared to traditional cleaners which would require multiple full-size trucks. A major emissions win!
Tablet and Powder Packaging: All refills (tablets and powders) are packaged in industrially compostable packaging for a zero waste experience. Plus, the lightweight packages minimizes shipping emissions!
Shipping Boxes: Our shipping boxes are curbside recyclable and made with FSC Certified recycled paper materials. We use water-based inks that contain fewer solvents and no VOCs, along with water-activated paper tape that is recyclable, unlike most adhesives.
Our formulations prioritize the Platinum Material Health Certificate from Cradle to Cradle, which ensures the chemicals and materials used have been selected to prioritize the protection of human health and the environment. They also have the USDA BioPreferred, EPA Safer Choice, and Leaping Bunny certifications.
Made with only people and planet-friendly ingredients, all of our products are free from parabens, phosphates, ammonia, VOCs, chlorine bleach, or phthalates, so they’re safe for use around everyone in the household – from kids to pets.

People

Creating space for everyone

Since our inception, we’ve been committed to: 1) proactively supporting and spending with Black-owned businesses and brand partners, 2) giving each of our team members paid time off for political or civic engagement, and 3) making diversity a priority in every hiring decision. While we are always working to continuously improve, we’ve leveraged our platforms to celebrate different cultures and environmental practices, spotlight BIPOC voices in the intersectional environmentalism movement, and prioritized collaborations with BIPOC artists and business owners. We’ve overhauled our recruiting and interview processes to combat potential bias in hiring and we hold ourselves accountable as a Certified B Corp and with team engagement surveys.
We believe it’s important for business ethics to go beyond the walls of the HQ office and permeate the supply chain, engaging responsible manufacturing, enforcing fair treatment of workers, and reinvesting in natural capital. Therefore, we require all manufacturers of our tablets, powders and vessels to complete the UN Global Compact audit. We also require all of our China-based final product manufacturers to have an up-to-date BSCI audit completed by an approved third-party auditor.

Policy

Pushing the industry for progress

Since 2020, we've been actively outspoken about the pollution caused by Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) in our oceans, rivers and soil. In 2024, we announced our support of the Pods are Plastic Bill (Int 0035-2024), introduced to the New York City Council. This proposed legislation aims to prohibit the sale, distribution, offer for sale, or possession for sale within New York City of any laundry or dishwasher detergent pods and sheets containing Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) – a synthetic, petroleum-based plastic utilized in the packaging of single-dose laundry and dishwasher detergent pods and sheets. The enactment of this bill would send a significant message to both businesses and individuals: plastic products should not be designed to be disposed of down drains, thereby entering our waterways and environment.
We have always believed that moving the world away from single-use packaging is necessary in order to effectively reduce climate change and plastic pollution. Single-use packaging is the largest category of new plastic production and a huge source of plastic waste, which is why we are proud to support the PRRIA. If passed, the PRRIA will reduce wasteful plastic packaging by 50% over twelve years and require companies to pay for the management and recycling of packaging waste rather than taxpayers—providing hundreds of millions of tax dollars in tax relief to New Yorkers. This bill also improves recycling and prohibits certain toxic chemicals in packaging, including: PFAS, lead, mercury, formaldehyde, bisphenols, toluene and others.

USDA BioPreferred
All Blueland products hold USDA BioPreferred certification, ensuring transparency and use of biological ingredients through rigorous laboratory testing, as opposed to synthetic (fossil fuel-based) ingredients.
Leaping Bunny
We do not test on animals and partner exclusively with cruelty-free companies, using vegan ingredients in our formulations.
EPA Safer Choice
All Blueland products undergo EPA evaluation to meet Safer Choice criteria, ensuring safer chemical choices for their families and the environment.
Made Safe
Blueland products with the Made Safe seal mean their ingredients are not known or suspected to harm human health, animals, aquatic life or any part of the ecosystem.
